Everyone should know the basics of how to write a press release in Canada. It's as good as reading the news or an article, just in its raw format, one to whet the appetite of publishers and media alike, to carry the article and spread the news editorially.
1st Paragraph
The main rule of thumb is to start off listing down the 5W's and 1H of the event, product, organisation or personality you would like to write about. Write down all of those details and string it into a succinct sentence.
Where & When: Did it take place
Who: (e.g.: Officiated the event / attended)
What: (e.g.: was launched / was it about)
Which: (e.g.: was it a new product, flagship, etc)
How: (e.g.: with a ribbon cutting ceremony)
2nd to 4th Paragraphs:
Include important details, and have some of those key details and key messages coming out from quotes of the spokesperson(s).
Last Paragraph:
Leave the readers with something to look forward to, or leave them with a nice wrap up and closure to the piece.
After the last paragraph, you may want to create an overview of the organisation or party that is represented in the press release, in what is known as in the PR industry as a boilerplate.
Have a look at the sample below.
